Ventilation Layouts for Converted Factory Floors
How to position intake and exhaust paths when repurposing industrial buildings for mining hardware in humid South Korean climates.
Converted factory floors are the most common mining site we assess in Gyeonggi and Incheon. The buildings offer high ceilings and reinforced floors, but their original ventilation was designed for human occupancy, not continuous heat rejection from ASIC racks.
Intake and Exhaust Separation
The most frequent layout error is placing intake and exhaust openings on the same wall. Warm exhaust recirculates into the intake within minutes, raising ambient temperature by 4–7°C. We recommend a minimum 15-metre separation between intake and exhaust paths, or a physical barrier (internal wall or baffle) if separation is impossible.
For a standard 800 m² floor with 3.5-metre ceilings, our typical recommendation is:
- Intake: North or east-facing louvres at floor level
- Exhaust: Roof-mounted fans or high wall openings on the opposite side
- Hot aisle containment: Curtain or panel barriers between rack rows
Humidity Considerations
South Korea’s summer humidity regularly exceeds 80% RH. Mining hardware tolerates humidity better than many industrial machines, but condensation on cold surfaces during rapid temperature drops (common when summer storms pass) can cause board failures.
We advise installing hygrometers at intake and exhaust points and logging readings for at least one week before hardware installation. If intake RH consistently exceeds 75%, a dehumidifier at the intake plenum is cheaper than replacing corroded hash boards.
Seasonal Adjustments for Multi-Site Operators
Operators running sites in both coastal (Busan, Incheon) and inland (Daejeon, Chuncheon) locations should plan different fan curves per site. A fan speed that maintains 26°C ambient inland may overcool a coastal site and waste power, or undercool during a humid August week.

Noise and Neighbour Relations
Factory zones still have neighbouring tenants. Exhaust fans at full speed can exceed 75 dB at the property line. We map noise contours during site visits and recommend fan schedules that reduce speed during evening hours if local ordinances require it — accepting a modest temperature increase overnight.
