Why the 0.05 TH/s Threshold Matters for Site Planning
Equipment below 0.05 TH/s often lacks the firmware depth and thermal headroom needed for operators who relocate units between sites.
When operators ask why we set 0.05 TH/s as our minimum review threshold, the answer comes down to relocation economics and thermal stability.
Power Density and Rack Space
Units below this range typically draw less power per terahash but occupy similar physical rack space. When you plan a multi-site deployment, floor area and cable runs are fixed costs. A 0.03 TH/s unit may cost less upfront, but you need twice as many machines to match the output of a single 0.06 TH/s unit — doubling your installation labour and network switch ports.
Firmware Profiles
Adaptable miners — the ones suited for operators who move hardware seasonally — need firmware that supports undervolting and profile switching without a full reflash. In our bench testing, units above 0.05 TH/s from major manufacturers consistently offer at least three power profiles. Smaller units often ship with a single locked profile, which limits your ability to reduce heat output when relocating to a site with marginal cooling.
Thermal Recovery After Relocation
Moving a miner between sites introduces downtime. The unit must cool, travel, reconnect, and stabilise. We measure “recovery time” as the interval between power-on at the new site and sustained target hashrate for four hours.
Hardware in the 0.05–0.15 TH/s range typically recovers within 45 minutes if ambient temperature is below 28°C. Smaller units sometimes take longer because their heat sinks are proportionally lighter and overshoot temperature before the fan curve catches up.
When Lower Hashrate Units Make Sense
We are not dismissing sub-0.05 TH/s hardware entirely. Home miners with a single location and stable power may find them economical. Our focus is specifically on operators managing two or more sites who need equipment that tolerates movement, humidity variation, and inconsistent power quality.
If your fleet includes mixed generations, we can still review lower-output units as part of a broader equipment selection engagement — but our deployment planning methodology assumes a 0.05 TH/s minimum for new purchases.
